Dan the Automator Inks Global Publishing Deal with Atlas Music Publishing11/20/2014

New York, NY (November 20, 2014) – Veteran producer Dan “The Automator” Nakamura has signed a worldwide publishing deal with Atlas Music Publishing, as announced today by Richard Stumpf, CEO of Atlas Music Publishing. With his astounding breadth of diverse production credits, Dan the Automator has established himself as one of the most accomplished and versatile producers of the last two decades, having worked with some of contemporary music’s most acclaimed artists, including Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Kasabian, Kool Keith, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, and Cornershop, to name a few. His deal with Atlas Music Publishing encompasses his entire catalog (except collaborations with Dr. Octagon) as well as future works.

“Dan is a truly remarkable talent and has an incredible mind for music. He’s one of today’s most sought-after producers, and his decision to sign with us is further proof that songwriters and producers want a publisher that is committed to client service and stays active and engaged in their careers. We’re thrilled Dan has chosen to make us a part of his future, and we can’t wait to get to work with him,” said Richard Stumpf, CEO of Atlas Music Publishing.

“I am excited to get to work with Atlas. Their interest and commitment to music makes for a good environment to push ahead and I believe that their enthusiasm and collective experience will shine through in this new endeavor,” said Dan Nakamura.

Dan the Automator’s first steps toward a career in music came during the early 1990s in the Bay Area hip-hop scene, where he began doing local DJ gigs and experimenting with turntablism. He soon shifted his focus to producing beats, setting up a home studio where he worked on his own music and hosted other Bay Area luminaries, including DJ Shadow. He began to gain wider attention for Dr. Octagon, his work with rapper Kool Keith, a founding member of the group Ultramagnetic MCs, which led to further production work for groups including Cornershop and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion as well as remixes for Depeche Mode, Air and Mix Master Mike, to name a few.

In 1999, Dan the Automator and De La Soul producer Prince Paul teamed to form Handsome Boy Modeling School. Their album So…How’s Your Girl? became a hit and was named Spin magazine’s #2 album of the year. While working on the album, he met Eric “DJ Kid Koala” San and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, with whom he went on to found the groundbreaking hip-hop act Deltron 3030. The group’s self-titled debut became one of the most influential hip-hop albums of the decade and is considered a classic among fans of independent hip-hop. Dan’s work with Dr. Octagon and Handsome Boy Modeling School led Damon Albarn, co-founder of rock group Blur and a guest vocalist on the album, to invite him to produce the debut for Gorillaz, a project he’d started with Jamie Hewlett. The group’s debut album Gorillaz became a massive success, earning high praise from critics and selling over 8 million copies to date.

After his success with Gorillaz, Dan worked under the name Lovage to release the album Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By, featuring Mike Patton (Faith No More) and Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields). He also released the second album Handsome Boy Modeling School, White People, and continued collaborating with a variety of successful artists, including Anais Croze, Kasabian, and Jamie Cullum. In 2013, Deltron 3030 released their second album Deltron 3030: Event II, which received an enthusiastic response from both fans and critics. The album features collaborations with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zack De La Rocha, The Lonely Island, Black Rob, Damon Albarn, and Jamie Cullum, to name a few. One of Dan the Automator’s latest projects is Got a Girl, a collaboration with Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The group released their debut album I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now this summer.
